One tip to help increase mental focus for your son is to make sure that his room is organized and free of clutter. Also make sue that what he does each day as far as play, study etc has clarity. Also try to engage him in activities that require focus like puzzles. These tips are outside the realm of speed reading but lack of mental focus goes beyond reading and it is a wired pattern in the child's brain. We need to work to reconstruct that pattern and everything matters. Let me know if that helps or if you would like me to elaborate on this.

Hi,
I have a son that has difficulties with reading comprehension. Hei is 8 years old has lacks focus in many areas. Are these tips applicable to him, or are there any other things I can do to improve his focusing skills?

Very interesting post - it is very important to be able to comprehend people, places and things. After all, life is about understanding, right? I just wishmore people would be a bit more willing to understand things rather than just come to their own assumptions.

I find that the number one reason why most people have a hard time staying focused while reading is because they have become accustomed to the world of multitasking. Their brains have become wired to the lack of focus that comes with multitasking. I recommend that you practice focus or specific tasks till completion before moving on the next with item. You do this work outside of reading. This is some foundational work but it will do wonders to recalibrate your focus while reading.

Also, ever try meditation?

I recommend that we practice meditation regularly. Meditation helps build focus.

A quick tip however to help improve focus right away is to use your finger while you read. It sounds like a little bit of a pain but doing this whenever you can while you read, will recalibrate and rebuild your focus. Then when you are reading without using your finger, you will find that you are more focused. Also if you are reading online, I recommend you check out http://www.spreeeder.com and use that for reading. It will not only allow you to read faster but also help improve your focus. I use it to read blog posts and I can get trough a huge amount of information really fast and with great focus.

Really interesting article. I find that for me to comprehend the information I have to make an effort to stay focused. My mind always veers off in only a matter of seconds. I must make an effort to focus on what is being read.

Any techniques for staying focused while reading?
